MJSSA

The Malankara Jacobite Syrian Sunday School Association (MJSSA) is the official Sunday School wing of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church under the Holy apostolic See of Antioch and All the East. It plays a vital role in nurturing the spiritual life of our younger generation, helping them to grow in the true faith, traditions, and teachings of the Syriac Orthodox Church.

Founded with the blessing and vision of the Church hierarchy, MJSSA serves as a beacon of Christian education, imparting both biblical knowledge and the heritage of the ancient faith that traces its apostolic origin to St. Peter, the Chief of the Apostles.

History and Growth

The roots of organized Sunday School work within the Jacobite Syrian Church in India date back to the early 20th century. With the growing need to provide systematic Christian education to children and youth, the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Sunday School Association was officially established in 1920.

Since then, MJSSA has expanded across the dioceses of the Church, establishing units in almost every parish within India and abroad. Today, thousands of children study under the banner of MJSSA, guided by dedicated teachers and clergy, continuing a century-old mission of spiritual formation.

Vision and Mission

The core mission of MJSSA is centered around nurturing the spiritual development and Christian education of children and youth. The organization is committed to instilling deep-rooted faith and Christian values that align with the teachings of Holy Scripture and the rich traditions of the Syriac Orthodox Church.

Key Mission Objectives:

  • To nurture children in the true Orthodox faith and love of Jesus Christ.
  • To instill Christian values rooted in Holy Scripture and Church Tradition.
  • To preserve and promote the rich liturgical and spiritual heritage of the Syriac Orthodox Church.
  • To prepare faithful and responsible members of the Church who live according to the Gospel in their daily lives.

The organization's motto is derived from: "Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it." – Proverbs 22:6

Structure and Curriculum

MJSSA functions under the direct guidance of the Sunday School Board constituted by the Patriarchal Delegate and the Holy Episcopal Synod. Each diocese has its own Sunday School organization, headed by a diocesan director and a group of dedicated teachers who work collaboratively to ensure quality education and spiritual formation.

  • Faith and Doctrine of the Syriac Orthodox Church
  • Church History and Liturgical Practices

  • Prayers, Hymns, and Syriac Traditions

Textbooks are published and distributed by the MJSSA headquarters at Puthencruz, Kerala. Regular teacher training programs, examinations, and annual conferences ensure the academic and spiritual quality of teaching across all dioceses.
